Federal Reserve Cuts Interest Rates for Second Time This Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US central bank reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year amid financial volatility stemming from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Decision Comes at Unprecedented Moment for Federal Reserve

The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a quarter point to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an unprecedented juncture for the central bank. The institution has been under significant strain to cut rates even with persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts

In a announcement, the Federal Reserve stated that the unemployment rate had gone up but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Inflation has risen and stays moderately high.”

Federal Closure Hinders Fed’s Job

The continuing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Data Gap Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, such as the count of new jobs created to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The last jobs report was released in early September, prior to the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The number of positions added to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Alternative Reports Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was set to release last month’s employment data in the start of last month, it suspended its publication once the shutdown started. Private payroll firm ADP reported earlier this month that the private sector cut thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a indication that the job market is continuing to slow.

“Supply as well as demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” central bank head the Fed chairman stated recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from immigration and tariff policies.

Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still issued its inflation report for last month that indicated that costs are going up, although gradually. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since January. In April, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the lowest it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is two percent.
