A recent study indicates that patients who discontinue new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy may regain reduced body mass far faster than those who end traditional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a major medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Users using such medications must be aware of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy concludes," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain implies a reversion to pre-treatment mass within about 18 months.
Analyzing Therapies
The study, which looked at 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.
The team emphasize that individuals who lose weight through dieting generally see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Explaining the Quick Regain
Experts propose the way of the jabs is key to understanding the accelerated regain.
The injections imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which moderates hunger.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.
"Withdrawal of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making binge eating far more likely."
An Ongoing Issue?
The NHS suggest the injections for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.
Professionals argue that, due to the likelihood of weight regain, the therapy might need to be life-long.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
Individuals who have discontinued the jabs explain a powerful return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger activating and you're instantly starving," recalled a patient.
This challenge is worsened if individuals have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Use
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among women than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many access the drugs through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Finally, researchers emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on integrated lifestyle changes.
