Meteorological devices containing a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for hours when multiple of them entered the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two balloons ending up precisely above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the atmospheric instruments launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is home to Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons carrying numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, over five hundred weather devices have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were noted during the prior year.
Regional Consequences
Meanwhile, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which likewise adjoins Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which illegal goods were transported from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Criminal Methodology
In response to questions about why criminal organizations employ a technique that proves particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are rudimentary tools used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that such operations become not financially viable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have caused air traffic disruption across the continent.
Parallel situations in nearby states have led European authorities to fast-track conversations about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
